Ellie’s Lyon beat Arsenal in WCL semi | 01:34
The Matildas are reportedly one step closer towards securing their next head coach, with Joe Montemurro set to break his contract with Lyon at the end of the season.
The 55-year-old, born and raised in Melbourne, has been linked with the vacant Australian coaching role for several months despite being one season into a multi-year contract with Lyon, signing on with the French powerhouse until 2027. However, according to French publication L’Equipe, Montemurro will leave his job at Lyon at the end of the season, which concludes this month.

The Matildas have been searching for a new head coach since Tony Gustavsson stepped down from the role following last year’s disastrous Olympics campaign in Paris, with Tom Sermanni filling the vacancy on an interim basis since.
Montemurro has previously won trophies mentoring Melbourne City, Arsenal, Juventus and Lyon, working alongside Australian superstars Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley and Ellie Carpenter. Lyon has already sealed the Division 1 Féminine title, but crashed out of the Champions League last week following a semi-final defeat to Arsenal.
Asked about the potential of coaching the Matildas last month, Montemurro responded: “Never rule out anything in football.
“You know football, it changes. It’s still a long way away. I’m under contract and I need to respect that.
“I’ve had two discussions with FA, positive discussions – they’ve been very, very good and been fantastic to be honest, very professional.”
The Matildas, who have not won a major trophy since 2010, will be hoping to break their drought next year when they hosts the 2026 Asian Cup.
