Heartwarming Ange Moment We Overlooked Amidst Aussie Triumph

‘Get ready for a parade’ – Full Presser | 12:19

Ange Postecoglou honoured his late father, Jim, after making history as the first Australian manager to win a major European football trophy.

Postecoglou led Tottenham to their first trophy in 17 years – and first European triumph in 41 – in a 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Thursday morning.

With his father passing in 2018, the victory had an extra layer of importance for the 59-year-old, who was seen in a lengthy embrace with his wife and two of his children on the field after the match.

He later explained that he feels his father is still by his side, guiding him towards success.

“He’s still with me mate. His voice is in my head all the time and as I get older, I look in the mirror and I see his face sometimes, as frightening as that might seem,” Postecoglou said during his press conference.

“He’s with me all the time mate and my dear mum is with my sister in Greece and my nephews and I’m sure they’re over the moon.”

Postecoglou lost his father before hitting his career high of becoming manager of Celtic in 2021, and Tottenham in 2023.

Although wishing he could have celebrated these moments alongside him, Postecoglou has spoken about how grateful he is to his father’s sacrifices in getting him to this position.

In a 2023 press conference, Postecoglou was asked what his father’s advice would have been when he gained his position at Tottenham.

“Don’t stuff it up, mate,” Postecoglou said.

It was his father that first got Postecoglou involved in football, as he played and coached to feel closer to his family.

Postecoglou spent weekends playing football with his dad, the two forming a love of the game together.

Jim played a huge role in football career, watching and supporting him from juniors through to captaining and coaching with South Melbourne.

“I’ve said before, he’s been the greatest influence on my life,” Postecoglou said in a 2023 press conference.

“He always said, ‘You do these things for other people,’ and I’m doing it for my family now — my boys and my wife and all those people.”

Born in Greece and migrating to Australia when he was five years old, Postecoglou said he was proud to have family and friends watching on from both nations.

“Yeah, it’s massive in Australian and in Greece,” he said on Thursday.

“Everyone in Australia, they’ll be up early in the morning, and they’ll be buzzing, and people in Greece and the people here with me. It’s another special night we share together.”

Despite the monumental game, the manger’s future at the club remains in doubt, as there continues to be uncertainty on whether he will be retained for next season.
