BILLY GRAHAM: 1918 – 2018
For immediate circulation
On 21 February 2018, Rev Billy Graham passed away after a life of Christian evangelism and advocacy. His work touched the lives and provided inspiration to countless people across the world, both in the US as well as here in Australia.
The Rev Fred Nile MLC was the Director of the 1968 Billy Graham Crusade at the Sydney Showgrounds. That event was attended by 455,000 people who drove and flew in to hear Rev Graham speak as well as network with each other and form bonds that would last a lifetime.
Rev Graham has an enduring legacy; he showed how a fearless promotion of the Christian message forms the bulwark of strong Christian leadership and he will undoubtedly be remembered for setting an exemplary high standard for those who will follow in his footsteps. He illustrated a model of personal courage and organisational strength that will undoubtedly be studied by social and political activists long into the future.
Rev Fred Nile MLC makes the additional comments in relation to the passing of a mentor and friend:
“I have many fond memories of Billy Graham as he was always my hero as a teenager. My greatest shock came when Bishop Clive Kerle, Chairman of the 1968 Billy Graham Crusade invited me to be Full-time Crusade Director from 1967 to 1969 which was a great honour. It meant I would meet Billy Graham! We give praise to God for the way he blessed the 1968 Crusade in the large Sydney Showground arena for nine days from 20 to 28 April 1968. 22,420 people came forward in response to Billy Graham’s call to accept Jesus Christ as Saviour and 80% were 25 years and under. They were all referred to local churches for follow-up and a number became ministers.”
