This must be the last lockdown
July 14, 2021
The Christian Democratic Party says the greater Sydney lockdown must not be extend beyond July 30.
“The damage to mental health, businesses and family incomes versus the risks posed by Covid-19 do not justify on-going lockdowns” CDP spokesman Lyle Shelton said today.
Responding to the Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s announcement today that the lockdown would extend another two weeks, Mr Shelton said that should then be the end of it.
“Many comparable countries are living with Delta strain in the community and this is not causing their hospital systems to be overrun.
“We have done a good job protecting those most vulnerable. The risk of hospitalisation or death among the wider community is low”.
“Taxpayer’s money spent on assistance should now be redirected to bolstering the protection of those most at risk from Covid so that the rest of society can open up.” Mr Shelton said the CDP did not believe a proper risk assessment of such a hard and prolonged lockdown of greater Sydney had been conducted.
“Sooner or later we are going to have to get used to the virus circulating and that will continue even after the vaccination threshold has been reached.
“The cost to mental health and the economy is too great to justify continuing lockdowns. This must end on July 30 if not before” Mr Shelton said.
Lyle Shelton is Director of Campaigns and Communications for the Christian Democratic Party. The Reverend Honourable Fred Nile MLC has nominated Lyle to succeed him in the NSW Parliament when he retires in November.
