Tennis champion Margaret Court has on various occasions come out in support of traditional marriage in Australia. As a result, she has been lambasted by the press and various sporting, political and cultural elites. Google Maps has also prematurely “renamed” the iconic Margaret Court Arena from its online services.

The Rev. The Hon. Fred Nile has commented on this disturbing trend in the following terms:

  • “I am astonished that in 2017 an individual can be vilified for expressing a legal view about an issue that is the subject of a major social policy debate.”
  • “Margaret Court not only has the right to an opinion, she has a right to express that opinion in public. This is the very essence of what a free democratic society should mean.”
  • “Why is it that advocates for marriage cannot feel safe speaking their mind? We are not the ones creating this hostile environment.”
  • “So called ‘marriage equality’ proponents claim they fear the debate will turn ugly, yet they behave in this soft totalitarian manner.”
  • “The action taken by Google Maps is positively Orwellian. One does not have to share Margaret Court’s views to be deeply disturbed by what these developments mean for the future of public discourse.”
