MEDIA RELEASE – 2021 05 11 – CDP Expresses Outrage at the Desecration of Christian Heritage in the Caucasus Region

10 May 2021

News of the continuing cultural cleansing of Armenian Christians in the Nagorno
Karabakh region (also known as the Republic of Artsakh) has deeply distressed the
Rev Hon Fred Nile MLC and his Christian Democratic Party team.

The November 9 Ceasefire Agreement, which was brokered by Russia between
Armenia and Azerbaijan, Armenian Christians have continued to be targeted for
forcible removal and their cultural heritage continues to be eradicated.
Rev Nile makes the following additional comments:

– “I have been contacted by the Armenian National Committee of Australia and
note their grave concerns about the situation in the Caucasus.”
– “Of particular outrage is the desecration of the Holy Saviour Cathedral in
Shushi, which is a key historical and cultural asset for Armenian Christians in
the region.”
– “In recent decades we have seen the systematic eradication of some of the
oldest Christian communities in the world, throughout the Middle East and
now also in the Caucasian region.”
– “The destruction of the Holy Saviour Cathedral in Shushi is emblematic of the
situation that the Christian residents of the Artsakh Republic find themselves
–  “It is hypocritical that the international community turns a blind eye to the
plight of these people, almost as if their culture and humanity did not rank as
highly on the humanitarian’s agenda.”
