Minor Parties under attack
August 18, 2021
On the 12th of August the Assistant Minister for Electoral Matters Hon Ben Morton MP introduced the Electoral Legislation Amendment (Party Registration Integrity) Bill 2021. Among other measures targeted at minor parties there is one core item of concern, that is the tripling of minimum required members for a Federally Registered Political Party from 500 to 1500 and for this list of 1500 to be provided in 90 calendar days. A political party that does not supply this is deregistered and no longer able to contest elections.
The Christian Democratic Party has numbers in excess of this figure and was successfully re-registered in October 2020 but is greatly concerned at the trajectory and intention of this legislation. There is no doubt in my mind that both the Liberal and Labor Parties feel threatened by the growing influence of Minor Parties and feel compelled to legislate us out of existence.
The passing of this legislation is almost certainly guaranteed.
It is on this basis that I urgently call upon our supporters to join the Christian Democratic Party. We need you to join as members to ensure that we remain a Political Party and you need us to remain a Christian Voice in Parliament.
