The Holy Bible, the Word of God, the trustworthy record of ‘God’s Love in Action’ .
Sadly, not everyone believes this to be true. I still remember when I had completed my full-time study for the Ministry – two years at Melbourne Bible College followed by five years at Theological College, the United Faculty of Theology at the University of Sydney and N.S.W. Congregational Theological College where I completed the L.Th. and averaged 92% in all my examinations. I was shocked when the Principal called me to his office and told me I would not be graduating in spite of completing all the requirements, examinations etc. I was completely shocked and said, “I have met all the College requirements!”. The Principal replied, “The reason is you still believe the Bible is true. You will spend another year in the College studying under expert theologians. I was tempted to resign but then God showed me this was another session of testing, so I said, “Yes”, and grew even stronger in my faith in the Living Word – our Lord Jesus Christ and God’s Written Word, the Holy Bible – which states in II Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be complete thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
The only way I could pass my examinations in the Modernist, liberal College, was by giving two answers to every question: first, the modernist reply they wanted; then my reply, what I believed -so I kept the Faith. Thank God that these attacks only made my faith stronger and vital. Unfortunately, there are some clergy who do not believe in the Virgin Birth or the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Throughout the New Testament there are earliest Creeds summarising the birth, life and death of Jesus Christ, such as Philippians 2: 5-16; or II Timothy 2: 11-13.
We should not be surprised at the unbelief, because God’s Word gave us many warnings, such as II Timothy 4:13 – “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine.” That is why I resigned from the Uniting Church when they announced they would ordain practising homosexual men. When I challenged this evil policy as against the Bible teaching, they replied the Bible is not the authority so there is no use you quoting the Bible, that homosexuality is an “abomination” – something God hates!
I am pleased the early Church adopted the Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day He rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting. Amen
These truths are further confirmed by the Nicene Creed when all the Bishops met in 312AD and confirmed these basic Christian Truths:
WE believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
Eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
True God from true God, begotten, not made,
Of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and our salvation he came down from heaven;
By the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
And was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
And his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
Who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
May the Lord help us at this Easter season to follow this injunction in II Timothy 4: 2
“Preach the Word! Be ready in season and out of season; convince, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and teaching.”
