The Church and Homosexuality

Letter to The Herald-Sun, 29th October 2007

Christopher Bantick in his opinion article Service for gay clergy nothing but a sad secret (Herald-Sun October 1), claims that the Anglican church is unloving towards homosexuals for failing to openly endorse same-sex relationships. He further claims that failure to bless such unions goes against the "foundations of Christianity" and will result in the continuing decline of the Anglican church.

To believe this, Bantick must have a very unorthodox understanding of Christianity. He has it exactly backwards - the reason for the decline in support for certain Christian denominations is, among other things, because of their equivocation on the issue of homosexuality. If the Anglican church or any denomination were to fully endorse homosexuality in the way that Bantick advocates, their demise would be certain.

What these churches ought to be doing if they want to reverse the hemorrhaging of members and loss of relevance, is to return to Biblical Christianity - that is, they need to take the Bible seriously as they once did. The most loving thing the church can do for anyone, and this includes homosexuals, is to tell them the truth and to clearly proclaim to them the Gospel. When this now novel approach is tried, many former homosexuals report that through the power of the Gospel they are delivered.
