CDP Policy on Homosexuality
The Christian Democratic Party does not support any measures giving any special interest group (such as homosexuals) any 'right' on the basis of sexual preference. We do, however, support everyone (including homosexuals) continuing to enjoy those rights granted to all citizens of Victoria and Australia that are independent of sexual preference. It is CDP policy to promote laws which reflect Biblical morality. Further, we believe that our rights are only those granted us by God our Creator. Put another way, we do not have the right to conduct ourselves in any way contrary to God's revealed instruction in the Bible.
We have no hesitation or embarrassment in holding to this view, because we believe homosexuality to be a personal choice rather than an inherited condition. Despite much effort to prove a genetic basis to homosexuality, no such link has ever been proven. On the contrary, the many testimonies of those who have left the homosexual lifestyle, clearly support the Biblical view that homosexuality is ultimately a choice, no different in principle from the choice to lie, steal, murder, commit adultery or molest children.
There is also the much documented issue of the negative health consequences of the homosexual lifestyle. So even from a purely public health perspective governments should discourage the practice. Yet, even in the unlikely event that modern medical science were able to overcome both the physical and psychological problems associated with the homosexual lifestyle, Christian groups should still be opposed to the practice on the grounds that is contrary to God's natural order. History demonstrates that societies that normalise homosexuality (and other practices that God prohibits) and rebel against God's created order, are heading for disaster. Such may well be the case in Western civilisation.
So how should governments handle the issue of sexual immorality including homosexuality? Even among Christians there is a range of views on this question, but the only consistent position is to prohibit by law any immoral practices, as was the case in most Western democracies only a few decades ago. This does not mean that we would wish to prosecute adults engaged in private consenting acts, but it would mean prohibition of any public acts or promotion thereof.
Certainly the interests of society are best served by upholding “traditional” marriage, especially in the raising of children. As has been demonstrated in Western democracies including Australia, once homosexuality is decriminalised all other 'rights' will inevitably follow as there is then no longer any credible reason why any benefit up to and including marriage should be withheld.
Our position is not 'homophobic' or motivated by hatred - the opposite is true. We seek to love God and our neighbour as ourselves. All forms of rebellion against God and His commands have eternal consequences but these can be avoided through repentance and faith in God's Son Jesus Christ who took our punishment upon Himself at the Cross. We do not view ourselves as being superior to anyone else: we are “sinners saved by the grace of God”. Therefore civil laws should discourage, or at least in no way reward, sexual immorality of any kind, homosexual or heterosexual, so that those who practice such things will have the conviction of their consciences reinforced by law and societal attitudes, leading to restoration with God.
