Legalise X-Rated Porn For NSW Families Say Greens

MEDIA RELEASE

Responsibility to Families to Legalise X-Rated Porn Say Greens

Friday, 2nd July 2010

The Rev Fred Nile MLC, Leader of the Christian Democratic Party, has again expressed disgust with the NSW Green Party after an attempt to highjack Parliamentary proceedings to call for the legalisation of X-Rated pornography. "This is just what our State needs right now, it's a disgusting move by a Party increasingly out of touch with any sense of social responsibility", said Rev Nile.

Rev Nile's comments came in response to an urgency motion moved in Parliament by Greens MLC Lee Rhiannon, arguing that legislators had a responsibility to NSW families to legalise X-Rated pornography.

"The Christian Democrats try to play up the nature of this material as being perverse...but we must deal with the facts...30 per cent of the adult population of New South Wales buy X-rated films at some stage in their lives..more than two million people currently have them in their home. It is urgent that this motion be debated because the material is going to be sold, whether Reverend the Hon. Fred Nile and others who back his position like it or not. That is the reality of the situation.

We need to deal with this matter today as this Parliament has a responsibility to families and business owners to close this loophole (legalise X-Rated material)", said Ms Rhiannon. Ms Rhiannon argued that the issue was urgent following a Police raid on two Kings Cross porn shops that seized child pornography, X-rated and other prohibited material.

"This is a matter of urgency because for too long the uncertainty in the law covering X-rated materials leading to these raids has resulted in New South Wales police wasting their valuable time ..spending an entire day confiscating material... wasting their valuable time and public resources on meaningless pursuits", Ms Rhiannon stated.

Rev Fred Nile responded, "this motion-predictably moved by the Greens, seeks to legalise X-rated, hard-core pornography in New South Wales.  I believe the motion, if carried, would damage the social and moral values of this State. I have given notice of my intention to introduce a Christian Democratic Party bill that would prohibit the possession of such material. The bill would close a loophole that apparently is worrying the Greens so much; indeed, that loophole is the principal reason for the Greens saying it is urgent that this issue be debated. The Greens need only to support the Christian Democratic Party bill to solve the problem.

The motion is not urgent. I congratulate the police on doing what Ms Lee Rhiannon is worried about: cracking down on the black market in this material. Indeed, Ms Lee Rhiannon herself referred to what the police have been doing in recent weeks in charging people and confiscating this material. The motion is not urgent because the police are enforcing the law and they are cracking down on the black market in hard-core porn in New South Wales. Therefore, there is no need for the House to debate this motion. If carried, the motion would only make more X-rated material-which I regard as hard-core pornography, including bondage material and rape manuals-available in this State".
