Constitutional Oath Makes a Comeback
Friday, 11th November 2011
The Rev Hon Fred Nile MLC, Leader of the Christian Democratic Party, has today introduced his Constitution Amendment (Restoration of Oaths of Allegiance) Bill 2011 into the NSW Parliament. The Bill provides an opportunity for Elected Members of Parliament and Executive Councillors to give an oath of allegiance to the constitutional head of State, Queen Elizabeth II of Australia, in place of a more generic pledge of loyalty to 'Australia'.
Amid constant interjections from the NSW Greens and the Left faction of the ALP, Rev Nile was noticeably delighted that "many years of progressing Republicanism had been reversed". "Some in this Parliament seem to have major problems with our current constitution and have, over many years, sought to destroy and remove all reference to parts of that Constitution that they did not like; not least of which was our constitutional head of state, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II", said Rev Fred Nile.
"The Bill does no more than represent the actual constitutional and legal position in this State and in the Commonwealth of Australia. And that is, as the preamble to the Constitution Act 1900 so clearly states, that the people, humbly relying on the blessings of Almighty God, have agreed to unite in an indissoluble federal Commonwealth under the Crown", stated Rev Nile during his speech in the NSW Upper House.
