AVENUES FOR THE
Petition to the Honourable the President and Members
of the Legislative Council of
The Petition of the Citizens of
1. the consumption of alcohol and other drugs increases in
proportion to their availability, accessibility and apparent acceptance by
society;
2. the State Government is under pressure from the
Federal Government’s National Competition Council policy to give permission to
corner shops, petrol stations, supermarkets and takeaway stores to sell
alcoholic beverages;
3. alcohol has been proven to damage or destroy cells
in the brain and every part of the body, and that its harmful effects on
society far outweigh any possible benefits.
Your petitioners pray that in view of Government responsibility to
protect the health and welfare of its citizens, especially the youngest and
weakest, the Parliament of New South Wales not only restrict the sale of
alcoholic beverages to existing outlets, but also reduce opening hours to eight
hours per day, six days per week, and place warning labels on all containers of
alcoholic beverages, especially those designed to attract the young.
