MEDIA RELEASE

Four Bills On Alcohol

Tuesday, 13th January 2009

Rev Fred Nile, member of the NSW Parliament and leader of the Christian Democratic Party has announced a four stage campaign against the societal evils attributable to alcohol abuse, including binge drinking, domestic violence, random assaults and alcohol related road accidents.

When the NSW Parliament resumes in March, Reverend Nile will move four Bills successively calling for these reforms:

  1. Ban all alcohol advertising in NSW in a fashion which will set an
    example for other governments,

  2. Lift drinking age to 21 in line with many States in the USA,

  3. Require all alcoholic drink containers to carry warning labels,
especially cautionary messages for pregnant women,

  4. Make NSW Parliament an alcohol-free workplace in accordance with
    occupational health and safety laws,

In the NSW Parliament Reverend Nile has led the way in introducing legislation to reduce the harm caused by smoking, for example with his pioneering Smoking Regulation Bill of 1997, his Bills to prevent advertising and display of tobacco products and the No Tobacco Smoking in Cars Bill.

Reverend Nile will be delighted to discuss the public health and public safety issues associated with his 2009 campaign against alcohol abuse.
