End mixed-gender hospital rooms - CDP

Christian Democratic Party Senate team leader for NSW, Pastor Paul Green, has again called for an Australia-wide ban on mixed-gender hospital rooms, often described as bays. "Mixed gender rooms impose an unacceptable level of stress upon male and female patients," said Paul Green.

"For many patients the impact amounts to embarrassment and humiliation, and in some cases the outcome can be sexual assault or physical harm."

Paul Green has a degree in nursing. "For too long the nursing profession has been bullied into accepting mixed-gender hospital rooms. Neonatal wards and intensive care aside, there is no sound clinical reason for forcing mixed gender rooms upon patients. As a Senator I'll work to impose sanctions on any State Health system which persists with mixed-gender hospital rooms."

Reverend Nile said "Paul Green issued a statement on this important matter on 28 August. I commend broadcaster Alan Jones for airing the issue with the help of Dr Michael Kennedy. I have no doubt that dignity and privacy are important elements in patient care."
