Dear Editor
Mr Tom Zreika, President of Lebanese Muslim Association, Lakemba, has used your letter page of 6 September to attack Christian Democratic Senate team leader for New South Wales, Pastor Paul Green.
I am proud to stand with Paul Green in calling for a ten-year Moratorium on Muslim immigration. I also strongly support Paul Green’s position that Australian immigration policy should give preference to Christians who are presently suffering persecution by Muslims.
It is important to understand that Muslims who have become refugees because of the hostile actions of other Muslims, to reach safety need only cross a border into another Muslim country, or in extreme cases might wish to cross two borders. Christians suffering persecution by Muslims, especially in the Middle East, are in a much more difficult position, and therefore deserve sanctuary in Australia.
Mr Zreika seems to be saying that no Australian has a right to express a view about preserving the Christian and pluralist character of Australia. Mr Zreika’s apparent desire to trample on free speech underlines the observation that Australians are entitled to feel threatened by unrestricted immigration on the part of individuals whose professed faith requires them to impose fundamental change upon the society which has been welcoming them.
Yours sincerely
Rev Fred Nile
