DRUG TESTING OF POLITICIANS

Dear Editor

The Sun Herald on 24 June 2007 carried a report of a call by a Liberal Senator for random drug testing of politicians.

The Christian Democratic Party advocates drug testing of Parliamentarians, and on Friday 16 March 2007, at his own request, CDP Leader Reverend the Hon Fred Nile MLC was tested for five drug groups in the premises of Parliament House, Sydney, by Mr Ian Jameson, Director of Integrity Sampling.

When I am elected I will move to introduce a Private Member's Bill calling for drug testing of all Parliamentarians and I look forward to the support of all Senators of goodwill.

I should mention that parliamentarians also have a responsibility to ensure that their judgement is not impaired by legal drugs, and I recommend that all Houses of Parliament across Australia exclude Parliamentarians who are under the influence of alcohol during the decision making processes. If you are too drunk to drive, you are too drunk to legislate.
