Fruit flavoured cigarettes playing kids for suckers

The Reverend Fred Nile MLC has called on the Iemma Government to immediately ban the sale of fruit-flavoured cigarettes which are being marketed towards teenage girls.

The cigarette packaging is clearly targeting teenage girls. The fluro pack and the fruity flavours are obvious ploys to hook young girls into a lifetime of tobacco slavery. The tobacco companies profit, our health care costs increase and the Government is sitting on its hands.

Rev Nile says the NSW Government is playing a stupid game of “pass the buck” by insisting the Commonwealth enact legislation to ban the cigarettes.

The NSW Government has the power to remove these cigarettes from retail shelves in NSW, just as the South Australian Government has done in that state.

In fact, states moving on this issue will act to encourage the Commonwealth to introduce a national approach. As things stand, said Rev Nile, it seems it’s a case of Iemma fiddles while our children burn.
